Job Overview

The Director of Archives leads the systems and workflows that enable the work we do on behalf of the Austin PBS community and preserve that work for generations to come.

This position provides strategic leadership, planning, and execution for Austin PBS’s preservation, content and metadata management, and distribution. You’ll make sure that everything we do and have ever done is accessible, searchable, and distributable in an ever-changing media landscape.

About the Austin PBS Archives

The Austin PBS archives include contemporary production materials, analog and born-digital audiovisual assets, photographic materials, technical and descriptive metadata, production and administrative records. Austin PBS understands the value of preservation and the need to make all station materials, new and old, more widely discoverable and accessible to the producers at our station, the PBS ecosystem, and beyond.

The Archive team is responsible for preserving and providing access to both contemporary and legacy assets in a broadcast production environment. Ongoing work includes an audio tape digitization project and the implementation of a media asset management system (CatDV), which will be used in all aspects of station operations from automated production and digital asset preservation workflows to metadata management. CatDV and other integrated systems will be an integral part of our data-driven approach to providing improved services to our communities and meeting our station’s mission.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain systems and workflows for the long-term preservation and curation of Austin PBS content, with focus on access and discoverability
  • Ensure interoperability of Austin PBS content management and archival systems with industry standards, partner organizations, and content distributors
  • Oversee digitization and cataloging of legacy archive assets through 3rd-party vendor
  • Manage external vendor relationships
  • Set and manage budget for Archives
  • Represent Austin PBS at conferences and professional events, including conducting presentations as appropriate
  • Manage and development team members

Education & Experience:

  • At least 5 years experience in related fields and functions
  • Experience in technical project management
  • Familiarity with structured data and databases
  • Preferred direct experience overseeing a content management system (CatDV or similar) would be great
  • Experience building, leading and mentoring a team
  • Preferred experience in a media organization and with common files/formats

  • This job may include sitting for long hours doing repetitive tasks
  • May be required to lift boxes of materials up 50lbs

This is a full time salaried position that is currently hybrid. Annual salary of $110,000 + commensurate with experience. Benefits
