Juneteenth Jamboree

Essay Competition

The Greater East Austin Youth Association (GEAYA) was formed in 1975 to provide recreational opportunities for central Texas children who had no other recourse in their lives. Some of these activities came at a cost which initially came out of the pockets of the founders. But this modest philanthropy that began as a football program has evolved into a year-round offering of athletic and cultural options for boys and girls, an effective nonprofit that attracts sponsors and contributors from all around the central Texas community. Perhaps the most popular effort of GEAYA is the Juneteenth Committee, which produces the annual Juneteenth Parade through East Austin. 2009 saw the creation of a Juneteenth essay competition for grade-school children, and attractive rewards of up to $250 cash for the 1st-prize winners. This package presents the 2009 winners and planners of the event.
