We’re Getting Excited About the Weather

This month, we’re exploring new skills with the brand-new PBS Kids show Weather Hunters. The animated series, created by Emmy-winning weatherman Al Roker, is targeted for kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade to learn more about earth sciences. Join eight-year-old weather wiz and force of nature Lily Hunter and her family as they explore and report on everything from rain, snow, dew, thunder, lightning, ice, and fog to more extreme weather conditions like hurricanes. The Hunter family aims to inspire a new generation to get interested in the incredible world of weather and investigate its role in their lives.

If you want to get the young kids in your life more excited about meteorology, check out our list of fun and educational books all about weather. Reading these kinds of stories with younger kids can help them understand and better prepare for all kinds of weather, even when it can get a little scary. Talking about things like storms, hail, and clouds can help kids learn to identify patterns and stay alert when they’re outdoors.

This easy activity uses supplies you probably already have at home and can get kids thinking about taking measurements, collecting data, looking for patterns, and making predictions about the environment. Soon enough, you’ll have an amateur meteorologist on your hands!
